Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jebtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃yébʰeti, from *h₃yebʰ- with a regular loss of medial *-b- in the infinitive stem due to the law of open syllables. Doublet of *jebàti. Cognate with Ancient Greek οἴφω (oíphō), Sanskrit यभति (yábhati). See: Proto-Indo-European '*h₃yébʰeti', Sanskrit 'यभति'.
