Etymology
1. Of uncertain origins. Cognate with norwegian gjø/gøyr (see etymology 3), norn gjoger (Unst: jøger)
2. and scots yoger. Kroonen (2013, 185) reconstructs a Proto-Germanic root *gōja/ō- (n./f.) “tendinitis crepitans,” and connects it to Ancient Greek χωλός (khōlós, “lame, paralyzed (especially of a foot)”), and suggests a source form Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoH-.
