Etymology

1. From Old Norse helvíti, from a Christian Pan-Germanic construction as Proto-Germanic *haljōwītiją, constructed from Hel (“the Underworld, the goddess of said realm”), hel (“death, the realm of death”) (itself from Proto-Germanic *haljō, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (“to cover, hide, conceal”)) + víti (“punishment”). Compare Faroese helviti, Norwegian and Swedish helvete, Danish helvede, also Old English hellewīte.
2. Hel is the equivalent of Hades in Greek mythology. See: Old Norse Nouns 'helvíti', Faroese Nouns 'helviti'.
