Etymology

1. Inherited from Old Norse umboðsmaðr (“authorised representative, steward”). The Old Norse form is a compound of the genitive singular of umboð (“commission, authority”) and maðr (“man, person”).
2. By surface analysis, ombud (“commission, public office; representative”) + -s- (“interfix”) + mann (“man, person”).
3. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk ombodsmann, Danish ombudsmand, Swedish ombudsman, Icelandic umboðsmaður and Faroese umboðsmaður (“authorised representative; ombudsman”).
