Etymology
Backformed from schmackofatzen (“to taste good; to eat something tasty”), from Polish smakować (“to taste (good)”), from Middle Low German smāken. The verb is usual in the Ruhr Area vernacular, where it fit in with Westphalian Low German schmaken. The formation was first popularized Germany-wide by the dubbing of the 1970 Italian film When women had tails, again around 1998 by the German Band Jazzkantine, a song on their album Geheimrezept, and then again in 2023 by a meme involving youtuber Daniel Beuthner.
