Etymology
1. Probably cognate with Old High German innuovili and Old English in(n)elfe, by surface analysis composed of inn and nafli, with an umlaut /a/ → /y/ (/i/). If so, probably from a Proto-Germanic ancestor *innabalją. Dauðyfli is probably derived from this word; however, semantically, the connection to nafli is not intuitive, and maybe forgotten in the derivation. According to Ph. D. E. Kleivane (Associate Professor in literacy, University of Oslo), probably not related to vanyfli.
2. Alternatively, however very unlikely, composed of an unknown lexeme *yf(i)l, meaning 'something mucinous, moist, loose; goo'. If so, maybe related to vanyfli. See: Old English Nouns '
in(n)elfe'.
