Etymology
Inherited from Middle French and Old French framboise (“raspberry”), from Frankish *brāmabasi (“blackberry”) (whence Dutch braambes), variant of Proto-West Germanic *brāmabaʀi (whence German Brombeere), all "blackberry, bramble". The French f- is due to dissimilation and influence by unrelated fraise (“strawberry”). See: Dutch Nouns '
braambes', German Nouns '
Brombeere'.
