French is spoken by 75 million native speakers in France, Belgium, Switzerland,
Canada, French Guyana etc. It's also the official language in numerous former French colonies.
Every French noun has a grammatical gender, either masculine or feminine. As in English, nouns
inflect for number. The plural is usually formed from the singular by adding the letter -s (cf.
maison > maisons 'houses'). Nouns ending in -au, -eu, and -ou often take the ending -x
instead (cf. jeu > jeux 'games').
