Etymology
From Old Norse skjól, from Proto-Germanic *skeulą; according to Pokorny, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (“to split”). Or, from *(s)kewH- (“to cover”), related to Proto-Germanic *hūdijaną (“to conceal”), Sanskrit स्कुनाति (skunā́ti, “he covers”).
