Etymology

1. Causative counterpart to *xvatъ (“grip”) + *-iti, the former component of unclear further origin:
2. * For the ultimate origin, Bičovský proposes a Proto-Indo-European root of the form *skweh₂t- (with zero-grade *skuh₂t-); however, he doesn't propose any cognates outside of Slavic, and notes only derivations.
3. * Alternatively, ESSJa espouses a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *swé (“self”), with sense development "to take for oneself" > "to grasp, grab".
