Translations

Etymology

1. From gaum (“heed, attention”) + -e (“verb-forming suffix”), literally “to give heed or attention”. The base noun gaum (“heed, attention”) is inherited from Old Norse gaumr (“heed, attention”).
2. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk gaume and gauma, and dialectal English English gaum (“to understand, notice”). More distantly related are gjemme and gjømme, which continue Old Norse geyma (“to heed, guard, keep”), from Proto-Germanic *gaumijaną (“to heed, notice, observe, keep”). See: Norwegian, nynorsk 'gaume', English 'gaum'.
