Etymology
According to De Vaan, probably from from Proto-Indo-European *ḱléwt (“to hear”), the aorist of *ḱlew-. There is a corresponding stative present in Latvian sluvêt, though De Vaan suggests that th is probably an independent innovation. Further cognate with Lithuanian klausýti, Old Church Slavonic слоушати (slušati, “to hear”), Sanskrit श्रोषति (śroṣati), and Ancient Greek κλέος (kléos, “glory, renown”). See: Proto-Indo-European '
*ḱléwt', Old Church Slavonic '
слоушати'.
