Etymology
Debated (the Galician diphthong is not compatible with the etymons proposed for the other Romance cognates). Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese moucho (first attested in 1421); probably from an adjective meaning "blunted". Compare Portuguese mocho and Spanish mochuelo. See: Portuguese Adjectives '
mocho', Spanish Adjectives '
mochuelo'.
