Etymology
From Old Galician-Portuguese barbaro, from Latin barbarus (“foreign, savage”), from Ancient Greek βάρβαρος (bárbaros, “foreign, strange”), of onomatopoeic origin, mimicking the sound of foreign languages. Doublet of berbere and, possibly, of bravo /brabo. See: Latin Adjectives '
barbarus'.
