Etymology
1. 1599, in ref. to sight, "to make clear," from un- (2) + veil (v.). Sense of "to display or reveal" (something) is from 1657.
2. From Middle English *unveilen (suggested by past participle unveiled, vnueylyd (“unveiled”)). Equivalent to un- + veil. Ultimately from Latin velum (whence also English voile, English reveal, Russian вуа́ль (vuálʹ), Russian завуали́ровать (zavualírovatʹ) (compare typologically)).
3. Also compare typologically uncloak, unmask, Russian разобла́чать (razobláčatʹ) (akin to облаче́ние (oblačénije)). See: English '
voile', English '
reveal', Russian '
завуали́ровать'.
