Etymology
1. c.1384, probably related to M.Du.
rommelen "to rumble," M.H.G.
rummeln, O.N.
rymja "to shout, roar," all of imitative origin. The noun is attested from c.1386. Slang noun meaning "gang fight" is from 1946. Meaning "backmost part of a carriage" is from 1808 (earlier
rumbler, 1801), probably from the effect of sitting over the wheels; hence
rumble seat (1912).
2. From Middle English rumblen, romblen, rummelyn, frequentative form of romen (“to roar”), equivalent to rome + -le. Cognate with Dutch rommelen (“to rumble”), Low German rummeln (“to rumble”), German rumpeln (“to be noisy”), Danish rumle (“to rumble”), all of imitative origin.
3. Compare typologically Russian громи́ть (gromítʹ), погро́м (pogróm), разгро́м (razgróm) (akin to гром (grom), греме́ть (gremétʹ), громыха́ть (gromyxátʹ)). Also compare гро́хнуть (gróxnutʹ) (akin to гро́хот (gróxot)). See: Dutch '
rommelen', Low Saxon 'rummeln', German, old spelling '
rumpeln', Danish '
rumle'.
