Etymology
1. "to deceive after holding out hopes," 1673, from jilt (n.) "loose, unchaste woman; harlot" (1672), perhaps ult. from M.E. gille "lass, wench," a familiar or contemptuous term for a woman or girl (c.1460), originally a shortened form of woman's name Gillian, popular form of Juliana.
2. Contraction of jillet (“a giddy girl, a jill-flirt”).
