Additional Information

Etymology

1. 1330, "to estimate, calculate," from O.Fr. esmar, from L. aestimare "appraise" (see estimation); current meaning apparently developed from "esteem," through "calculate with a view to action" (c.1400), then "calculate the direction of a missile" (1573).
2. The verb is from Middle English amen, aimen, eimen (“to guess at, to estimate, to aim”), borrowed from Old French esmer, aesmer, asmer, from Latin ad- plus aestimare (“to estimate”), the compound perhaps being originally formed in Medieval Latin (adaestimare), perhaps in Old French.
3. The noun is from Middle English ame, from Old French aesme, esme. See: Old French 'esmer'.
