Etymology

From Old Irish tengae, from Proto-Celtic *tangʷāss (compare Welsh tafod), from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s (“tongue, speech, language”). The dative singular form teangaidh as the nominative singular is archaic but still survives in Ulster.
