Etymology

From Middle Irish rú (“red dye plant, lady's bedstraw, madder”), from Old French rue (“rue”), from Latin rūta, from Ancient Greek ῥῡτή (rhūtḗ). Rue itself is not used in dyeing; the association with red dye may be attributed to the word’s phonological similarity to rúad (“red”). See: Latin Nouns 'rūta'.
