Etymology
1. From Old Norse kobbi, kubbi (“lumpy thick object → seal; also islet, etc”), referencing the shape of the seal, alternatively the resting spot of the seal, from Proto-Germanic *kubb-, from Proto-Indo-European *gup- (“round object, knoll”), from *gew- (“to bend, curve, arch, vault”).
2. Compare cognate Norwegian and Swedish kobbe (“seal”), stor-kobbe, stor-kobb (“bearded seal”, literally “big-seal”), Swedish kubbsäl (“harbor seal, Phoca vitulina”, literally “kobbi-seal”), synonym of knubbsäl (“id”, literally “knub seal, knob seal”); also Swedish kobbe (“islet, small cape”).
3. Also compare related Old Norse kubbi, kubbr, short log; walrus, trékumbr (“firewood chopping block”, literally “tree-kumbr”). See: Old Norse Nouns '
