Etymology

1. Probably related to vinde (“to wind, turn”). It may ultimately continue *wanduz (“mole, vole”), perhaps through Middle Low German *want (“mole, vole”) or Old English wond (“mole”), but the immediate route into Norwegian is uncertain.
2. Compare dialectal Swedish Swedish vand and vande (“vole”), and dialectal English English want and wont (“mole”). See: English Nouns 'want'.
