Etymology

Inherited from Danish potet, from English potato, from Spanish patata, from Taíno batata. In Denmark it was displaced by German kartoffel, which never established itself in Norway. Both words stem from the 18th century when the potato first became common in Scandinavia. See: English Nouns 'potato', Spanish Nouns 'patata'.
