Etymology

From Middle Dutch ersetere, arseter, arsete, from Old Dutch ercetere, from Proto-West Germanic *arcijātārī. The modern form is based on or influenced by German Arzt. All borrowed from Medieval Latin arcīāter, from Late Latin archīāter, from Ancient Greek ἀρχιατρός (arkhiatrós). See: German Nouns 'Arzt', Ancient Greek Nouns 'ἀρχιατρός'.
