Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *olibaum. Cognate with Old High German olibaum (German Ölbaum). Compare also Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌴𐍅𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌲𐌼𐍃 (alēwabagms), which is almost the same but has a slightly different word for "oil." Equivalent to ele (“oil”) + bēam (“tree”). See: German Nouns 'Ölbaum', Gothic Nouns '𐌰𐌻𐌴𐍅𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌲𐌼𐍃'.
