Etymology

From northern Middle High German smouch (13th c.), from Old High German *smouh, from Proto-West Germanic *smauki. Originally restricted to Central German, later reinforced by cognate Middle Low German smôk, but not fully established in the standard language (apart from the specialist use in weaponry). Further cognate with dated Dutch smook, dialectal English smeech. Also related to smoke, which compare. See: English Nouns 'smeech'.
