Etymology
1. Etymology tree
2. Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewlósder.
3. Proto-Italic *aulos?
4. Proto-Indo-European *h₂el-der.
5. Proto-Indo-European *-wósder.
6. Proto-Italic *alwos?
7. Latin alvus
8. There are two competing theories:
9. * From Proto-Italic *aulos with metathesis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewlós, nominal form of *h₂ewlo- (“tube, hole, channel”). Cognate with Ancient Greek αὐλός (aulós), Lithuanian avilỹs. Same metathesis seen in parvus - παῦρος (paûros). For the semantics compare Old Armenian փոր (pʻor, “cavity, hollow; belly”).
10. * Or from Proto-Italic *alwos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (“to nourish”) + *-wós. See: Ancient Greek Nouns '
αὐλός'.
