Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese esquina (attested in the Galician Cantigas de Santa Maria c. 1264) perhaps from Gothic *𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌽𐌰 (*skina), from Proto-Germanic *skinō (“rim, plate”). Cognate with French échine (“spine of an animal”) and English shin. See: French Nouns 'échine', English Nouns 'shin'.
