Etymology

Borrowed from English chacmool. Coined as Chaacmol by the British antiquarian Augustus Le Plongeon, who adapted the term from Yucatec Maya chak moʼol (“jaguar”, literally “red paw”) and claimed the meaning to be "thunderous paw". The original name of the Chac Mool sculptures remains unknown. See: English Nouns 'chacmool'.
