Etymology

Semi-learned borrowing from Latin scēptrum, from Ancient Greek σκῆπτρον (skêptron). The initial consonant group -sk- is merged by palatization into a single consonant, so the -e- prosthesis is not necessary (as, for example, in: Latin schola > escuela. See: Ancient Greek Nouns 'σκῆπτρον', Latin Nouns 'schola'.
