Etymology
Uncertain per Coromines & Pascual. Corriente sees in it a borrowing from a Mozarabic *šalqassún, assimilated variant of an older *šalqastún, from Latin salicastrum (“wild vine”) + -ōnem (augmentative ending). For the loss of the initial sibilant, he points to Valencian alcorroc < Arabic شَقَرَّاق (šaqarrāq, “common roller bird”). declared of Andalusi Romance or echoic derivation. If he is right, that would make arcazón a doublet of jaguarzo (“rockrose”) and sargazo (“gulfweed”). Alternatively from arca + -zón. See: Latin Nouns '
salicastrum'.
