Etymology

Ultimately from Latin vappa (“flat wine, worthless person”), probably through the intermediate of dialectal Old French, namely Picard vape, wape, gape (“dull, insipid (of food); weakened (of people); deranged (of the stomach)”), which has possibly, but not necessarily received influence from Proto-Germanic *hwapjaną (“to breathe, air out, let go to waste, become sour”), whereas modern French gouape is a reloan from Spanish. At one point the word meant “rascal, ruffian” and evolved in meaning over time. See: French Adjectives 'gouape'.
