Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *skek- (“to move quickly, jump”). The derived sense of "to happen" appears to have developed at an early stage. Cognate with Old Irish scuichid (“to move, start, go”), Welsh ysgogi (“to move, stir, tremble”), Proto-Slavic *skočìti (“to jump, leap”). See: Welsh '
ysgogi'.
