Etymology

1. Borrowed from French voiture (“car, wagon”), from Latin vectūra (“transportation, fare, wagon”), feminine of vectūrus, the future active participle of vehō (“to carry, to bear”, root also of veículo (“vehicle”)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ- (“to bring, to transport”), thus distantly related to English way. Not related to via and viagem.
2. Alternatively, from an unattested Old Galician-Portuguese *veitura (compare leito, from lēctus), from the same Latin source above, with either contamination by via (“way, path”, i.e. the medium for transportation) or natural sound-change through metathesis: *veitura > *vietura > viatura. See: French Nouns 'voiture', English Nouns 'way'.
