Etymology
1. From Proto-Germanic *krampijaną, causative of *krimpaną.
2. The Old West Norse form is kreppa, following an Old Norse development in the 7th century with the assimilation of -nt-, -nk-, -mp- into -tt-, -kk-, -pp-. The East Norse form descends from *krimpa the strong verb, and, *krympa, the zero-grade form remained partially more archaic, giving the form krimpa. An analog East Norse form is however found in dialectal Swedish kräppa, indicating an Old East Norse *kræppa.
3. Compare spretta, *sprætta, causative of *sprenta, *sprinta.
