Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *angul, from Proto-Germanic *angulaz (“fishhook”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enkulós (“bent, crooked”). Cognate with Old Frisian *ongel, Old Saxon angul, Old High German angul, Old Norse ǫngull, and outside of Germanic, with Ancient Greek ἀγκύλος (ankúlos, “bent, crooked”). See: Old Norse Nouns 'ǫngull'.
