Etymology

abc + bok, first part is the three first letters of the Norwegian alphabet, a, b and c. Last part from Old Norse bók (“beech, book”), from Proto-Germanic *bōks (“letter”), either from *bōkō (“beech”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵos (“beech”), or from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂g- (“to divide, distribute, allot”). See: Old Norse Nouns 'bók'.
