Etymology
From Arabic طَلَبَ (ṭalaba, “to demand, ask, beg”). Though the Arabic verb can mean “to ask God in prayer”, the general sense “to pray” is not present. In Maltese, it is without doubt a semantic influence from Sicilian prigari (both “to ask” and “to pray”), from Latin precari. See: Arabic '
طَلَبَ', Sicilian 'prigari', Latin '
precor'.
