Etymology

From Old Occitan amistat, from Vulgar Latin *amīcitātem, derived from Latin amīcus (“friend”). Attested since the 1240s, a regular apocope of Old Italian amistade (as a personal name since 12th c.). Eventually replaced by the Latinism amicizia. Compare Sicilian amistà and amistati. See: Latin Nouns 'amīcus'.
