Etymology

From Old Norse vað, from Proto-Germanic *wadą; whence also Old English wæd, Swedish vad short for of vadställe, Danish vad, Norwegian vadested and Old High German wat. Compare the Latin vadum (“a ford”). The noun vað is derived from the verb vaða (“to wade”) and is not borrowed from the Latin noun. See: Latin Nouns 'vadum'.
