Etymology
1. 1573, "to corrupt, contaminate," also "to trouch, tinge, imbue slightly" (1591), from M.E. teynten "to convict, prove guilty" (c.1375), partly from O.Fr. ataint, pp. of ataindre "to touch upon, seize" (see attainder). Also from Anglo-Fr. teinter "to color, dye" (1409), from O.Fr. teint (12c.), pp. of teindre "to dye, color," from L. tingere (see tincture).
2. From Middle French teint, from Old French teint (past participle of teindre (“to dye, to tinge”)), from Latin tinctum (past participle of tingere); compare tint.
