Etymology
1. 1548, from M.Fr.
revolter, from It.
rivoltare "to overthrow, overturn," from V.L.
*revolvitare "to overturn, overthrow," frequentative of L.
revolvere (pp.
revolutus) "turn, roll back" (see revolve). The noun is from 1560.
Revolting is 1593, originally subjective; objective sense of "repulsive" is first recorded 1806.
2. Borrowed from French révolter, from Italian rivoltare, itself either from ri- with the verb voltare, or possibly from a Vulgar Latin *revoltāre < *revolvitāre, for *revolūtāre, frequentative of Latin revolvō (“roll back”) (through its past participle revolūtus).
3. Compare typologically Russian переворо́т (perevorót) (akin to верте́ть (vertétʹ). See: French '
révolter', Italian '
rivoltare', Latin '
revolvō'.
