Etymology
1. c.1300, "to regain consciousness," from Anglo-Fr.
rekeverer (1292), O.Fr.
recovrer, from L.
recuperare "to recover" (see recuperate). Meaning "to regain health or strength" is from c.1330; sense of "to get (anything) back" is first attested 1366.
Recovery is c.1302, in Anglo-Fr., both of health and of legal possession.
2. From Middle English recoveren, rekeveren, from Anglo-Norman recoverer and Old French recovrer, from Latin recuperāre, alternative form of reciperāre. Doublet of recuperate.
3. The noun is from Middle English recover, from the verb. See: Middle English '
recoveren', Anglo-Norman '
recoverer', Old French '
recovrer', Latin '
recupero'.
