Etymology

1. c.1400, from L. proclamare "cry or call out," from pro- "forth" + clamare "to cry out" (see claim). Proclamation "that which is proclaimed" is recorded from 1415.
2. From Middle English proclamen, proclaime, from Old French proclamer, from Latin prōclāmō, prōclāmāre, from prō- (“forth”) + clāmō (“to shout, cry out”). Spelling altered by influence of claim, from the same Latin source (clāmō). See: Old French 'proclamer', Latin 'proclamo'.
