Etymology
1. 1540, from M.E. gogelen "to roll about" (c.1380), infl. by M.E. gogel-eyed "squint-eyed, one-eyed" (1382), of uncertain origin, perhaps somehow imitative. As a surname (Robert le Gogel) attested from 1307. Noun sense of "protective eyeglasses" first recorded 1715.
2. From 14th century Middle English gogelen (“to roll (eyes), to look sideways”). Earlier source is unknown. The noun is attested from the 17th century. Compare Irish gog (“a nod, a slight motion”).
