Additional Information

Etymology

1. O.E. gadrian, gædrian "to gather, collect, store up," related to gæd "fellowship," and god "good," from P.Gmc. *gadurojan "bring together, unite" (cf. M.L.G. gadderen, O.Fris. gaderia). Change of spelling from -d- to -th- is 1500s, reflecting earlier change in pronunciation.
2. From Middle English gaderen, from Old English gaderian (“to gather, assemble”), from Proto-West Germanic *gadurōn (“to bring together, unite, gather”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰedʰ- (“to unite, assemble, keep”). See: Middle English 'gaderen', Old English 'gaderian'.
