Etymology

From Old Danish gren, from Old Norse grein (“branch”), from Proto-Germanic *grainō. Maybe related to the verb *grīnaną, if the original meaning was "to yawn". The noun has replaced the older Germanic word for "branch", *astaz. See: Old Norse Nouns 'grein'.
