Etymology
1. Uncertain. Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary lists three possible origins:
2. * Derived from глух (gluh, “deaf”) + -ец (-ec), effectively cognate with Polish głuszec (“capercaillie”), Czech hlušec (“capercaillie”), Ukrainian глуше́ць (hlušécʹ, “wood grouse”), Belarusian глушэ́ц (hlušéc, “wood grouse”). The difference in semantics, however, is problematic. Bulgarian expresses the meaning “grouse” with the related term глуха́р (gluhár).
3. * Possibly remodified from an earlier *глишь (*glišʹ), borrowed from a Paleo-Balkan substratum (perhaps Thracian), originating from the Proto-Indo-European ancestor of Latin glīs, glīrus (“dormouse”). BER explains the shift *глиш → глушец with a possible influence from native плъх (plăh, “rat”). Original form may be indirectly reflected in denominal verbs *гли́хам (*glíham) ~ гли́фам (glífam, “to champ, to munch greedily”).
4. * Back-formed from dialectal галу́хци pl (galúhci), presumably a loanword from Greek γᾰλέη (galéi, “weasel”), again blended with native плъх (plăh). See: Polish Nouns '
